Sunday Flight report

Post by Eric » Mon Jun 13, 2005 10:32 am

Darold and I met Mike in Sonotia. The cycles were south west.
We had hoped to fly the Stones. It looked to light so Mike headed home and Darold and I headed for Box.
We arrived at launch to find light west winds some small cycles.
I launched at 4:40pm, worked a thermal to the top of the peak behind launch and split for the west ridge. I climbed just high enough with small hawk I had followed there to glide thru the upper saddle to the south west face of the PG launch area. Wind conditions seemed south westerly, and Chaz confirmed this from the lower launch area. I struggled for 15 minutes at launch level and below in small high pressure thermals. Finally climbing above only to drift far behind the peak to the north east. I glided back to the face and searched the area in front of the peak. The next cycle was a little better and I was able to climb to altitude and drift away. I topped out at 8900 msl just south of Rosemont ranch a mile over the back. It looks like there is a large graded flat area there I had not seen before. It did not seem as important then as now, after the land transfer article. I glided to the east end of the meadow looking for lift.
I worked small thermls with a lot of drift for 10 minutes east of route 83 and glided back to land. Darold arrived 15 minutes latter and we loaded up and drove back to town. I talked to Gunter on the radio while driving sounded like everyone had some airtime.
