Box Flying Report for Sunday 06/12

Post by Gunter » Sun Jun 12, 2005 9:26 pm

Irena, Chaz, Steward P. (a prospective PG/HG pilot - presently skydiver) and I arrived at the Box Lz at 4pm. Got to the lower launch shortly after 5pm just as Eric appeared over the top of Box in his HG. It seemed strong and bumpy over the top. Winds in the lower Lz were stronger than anticipated (cycling 12-15). I launched just before 6pm after it started to mellow. Had to work/ridge soar for over 15 minutes just in front of launch before I cauht a small thermal which took me over the SW bowl and up close to the top. The lift near the top was very strong, so I headed out front. Forward speed about 3/4 of the way to the top was about 5-8 mph. At about 6:35pm and 28 sec's the glass off kicked in. As I flew out front I got higher and higher (about 7000'+) Just about this time Irena launched. She had a great launch, flight, and landing. I actually saw her do a number of 360's and figure 8's in the process of coming down. After an hour of enjoyable flying, I did big ears, b-line stall, spirals, wingovers etc. to get down from 7k. And there in the Lz I met Irena with a huge smile on her face.
