Sat. Flying

Post by Gunter » Fri Nov 26, 2004 7:14 pm

As of Frid eve'g it looks like Box could be the place again. A little stronger than today,(Frid) which actually turned out to be to mild. My tentative plan is to be in the Lz at 12 noon, up at launch by 1pm, and in that sweet air by 1:30. By that time the winds should be out of the ssw@ 9-10 in the valley (12 -15 at launch) Hopefully, if it's too strong, wait for a low cycle and bench up. Fred launched early today (3 pm) and worked hard at benching up. Then around 4pm it died. Allen and I took sledders and alas, poor Irena, packed up and hiked down. And thanks again to arl for assisting in our low wind launches.
I will post again around 8:30 a.m. if there any changes.
Irena don't give up. Where's Chaz?
Ross were are you?
Red how about you.
What about Ray and Sherry?
Earl come out again, I promise it will be better.
Ed, what about you?
Fred, come out again, it's soooo much quieter and easier than motors.
Let's make it a fly-fest!

flying?

I fell off the face of the earth and have a house full of boxes between me and the mountains. Temporary setback I hope.

Sat. Box Flying Report

Post by Gunter » Sat Nov 27, 2004 5:20 pm

Who said flying isn't a lonely sport. Met myself in the Lz at noon. Hiked up (45 min). It was dead, as I expected because the winds weren't supposed to switch from ESE to SW until between 2 and 3 pm. I spent an hour cleaning up the SW launch (snippers) and then set up. At exactly 2:30 pm it picked and stayed "on" the rest of the afternoon. Had good launch straight up. Benched up and flew all over the valley. (17 miles). Max alt was 6,700. At one point just before landing I hovered 500' over the lz for 5 min's, not going forward and not sinking. It was smooth with an occassional jolt of turbulance. Thanks to all of the local flyers (0) for not hogging the air. I forgot to mention that I flew for 1 hr and 10 min's. Gunter

someday, after my daughter graduates college (I'll be 64 if all goes well), I intend to retire and join you. Until then, I fly when time permits.

glad to hear that when a thermal releases in a forest, and I'm not there to hear it, it still rises.

Gratitude

I'll be back...

Thanks to all for an informative day even if it was a light one. I leaned a lot about the sport in that short afternoon.

Especially thanks to Gunther. You're a natural teacher and as my age mate, an inspiration.

Irena’s report from Friday 26.

Post by Irina » Sun Nov 28, 2004 4:41 pm

Fred! Thank you to give us (me and Shadow) a drive for Box Canyon, even I did not fly, I did a small step to work on my flight skill.
Earl!!! Thank you very much for help during my launch.
Fred, Shadow and me arrived forty minutes earlier than Gunter, Earl and Allen. Hike was easy as the weather was nice and cool. On the first knoll, the wind was N/W about 14-16 m/h. Fred got a nice launch from the North launch from the first knoll B. I watched his launch as well his first 10 minutes of flights while he played carefully with thermals in order to fly to the top of Box Canyon. He did it amazingly well and flew above the top of Box Canyon for a while (50 minutes). I decided to wait for Gunter and Allen and then launch: wind was gusty and a bit too strong to launch alone with my skill. When Gunter and Allen came they were very hurry to launch as the wind was dying. Both of them got nice flights to the LZ. Wind was dying when I begun to launch. I tried twice and realized that I had not enough skill to launch in almost no wind condition from the first knoll of Box Canyon. Earl helped me during of launch. Shadow was running around and disappointed  that I did not fly. I packed my paraglider. Earl helped me. Then Earle, me and Shadow hiked down. In whole, it was a good day for all of us, especially for Shadow. 8)

Friday Flying (wrong thread but topic switched to Friday)

Post by Allan » Sun Nov 28, 2004 8:43 pm

A short flight it was for me but I was very satisfied just getting another flight under my belt and my first stand-up spot landing in AZ. Many thanks to Earl for helping me get inflated, to Gunter and Fred for your tips and feedback, and especially to Irina for letting me go ahead of you (I asked because you seemed hesitant about launching there right then) and maybe sacrificing the last cycle to successfully get off in.
