Hi everyone,
My name is Scott Hooper. I graduated UofA in 92. I moved to SF Bay area in 1996.
I took up paragliding with my wife as of March of this year. We have flown almost every weekend (silly jobs). So 115 flights and 23 hours for me so far. We are going to Big Sur this weekend, and Torrey Pines on the way to Az. (20-22)
So I wanted to say hello. We are mailing our SAHGA membership form off today. (we will bring copies of it)
We hope that maybe we can meet up with some of you all during our time in Sierra Vista. Maybe Miller will be good conditions for us.... certainly close. (landing near Nick's place cracks me up, I wanna)
We will both be P3s by this year end, so maybe next time we come to town (Easter?)...we can get some A. So glad, you all got that site back.
OK, getting long winded here. Just want to say hello.
I will watch the board as best I can (traveling).
If Miller is looking good on 23 or 24th, maybe we can join you all?
My cell is 925 699 0906
Cheers,
~Hoop

welcome home
Sounds terrific. Ya' never know- Miller could be great that week and you could fly right home to Moson road.
(or, more likely, we might drag your arse to Box Canyon to fly)
SAHGA Club membership isn't mandatory to fly our sites, with the exception of 'A' Mtn. Box and Miller (as well as 3 others) are USHGA insured, so USGHA membership is all that we really ask. However, thank you for supporting our little club. Sometimes it takes me a month or two to bother to go to the bank and deposit checks, so if it doesn't clear for a while, it's my fault.

SAHGA Membership
Hi Morey,
If I'm interpreting your post correctly you are saying that SAHGA membership is not required to fly Box. But the SAHGA website says "Must be SAHGA member or guest due to state-owned LZ special use permit." Can you please clarify this?
Thanks,
Allan

OK
Sure Allan:
The statement is correct as it reads.
We are allowed to utilize AZ state land via a permit that we apply for and pay for each year. This is for the Box LZ. While it is granted to SAHGA as a club, nowhere does it state that any specific membership is required. So that is why both club members, and guests of our club are permitted under the permit. The club does have the responsibility to monitor, brief and make sure that our club guests follow the rules. The series of rules that we must live by that are in the permit include things such as: no motorized travel off existing roads, not removing any natural products from the land, not removing any historic, archaeological items, leave gates as you found them, don't harass livestock, don't litter, and, probably most importantly- you hold the state harmless from and against all liabilities...
So, as long as you are a guest of the club, and you abide by the state rules in the permit, which are all pretty reasonable- you may land in the LZ, which is state land.
The launch, however, is Forest Service property, and requires us to cover it with site insurance (third party liability). SAHGA pays for this site insurance, and any USGHA member pilot that flies there is covered, whether or not you are a SAHGA member. SAHGA appreciates membership dues and donations to assist us with this, as our insurance bill is about $750 a year. Non-USHGA members aren't covered and violate our permit with the forest service.
hope that helps.

insurance
Thanks Morey, that helps a lot. The $750 annual cost, is that just for Box launches, or does that include other sites such as Miller? And can you share what SAHGA pays the state for the Box LZ permit? In any case, I certainly understand the importance of supporting SAHGA.
In gratitude,
Allan
