Columbus day on the A

Post by Eric » Tue Oct 12, 2004 9:29 am

The time restraints of my day off, errands to run and repairs on vehicles etc,, left me with few flying options.
The weather sevice promised good conditions for the A. They were right! I found my self near the A at about the right time by my best guess, 1030 to 1130. I expected the barometer to start falling by then and the wind looked ok a little light.
I like some base level flow around 15 to 20 is good it was blowing 10 to 15. I set up the Falcon to give it a try. I launched into a cycle of 15 mph straight in and was able to soar 50 feet over for a few passes. I needed to find some better lift! I got lucky and spotted a Hawk out in front of the hill climbing real fast. I headed out there to find I was now way below launch at the cliff level! The thermal was small and tight, the Falcon jumped right in there and headed for the sky. I held on like Chaplan grabbing a passing street car! After picking up 1500 feet I could easily see dust and debris below and above. I drifted over the back and crossed to Tumamoch Hill to the west. Worked some lift there for 10 to 15 minutes and lost some altitude. I glided back to the A still 800 feet over and flew for 50 minutes before landing in the east lz.
A nice mid day diversion.
The boulders were still in front of the launch ramp so I arranged to have them moved. The Palo Verdes were growing up in the lz so I cut them out along the main landing area.
See you all at the meeting tonight at Pizza Hut, 730 pm.
