PG Miller Flying Report for Sat.

Post by Gunter » Sun Jun 27, 2004 3:09 pm

We met in the LZ at 9am. There were 3 HG pilots- John, Jerry, and Allen (Phnx), and of course Loraine was kind enough to drive; and for PG pilots, Ilke (Phnx) and myself. The forecast I looked at called for winds out of the West most of the day, but to our pleasant surprize they were out of the East. I launched at 11am into a good cycle, and then flew around the corner (S) to the HG launch and found good lift. At one time I sunk out in front of the PG launch and crept around the SE cliffs again but much lower this time. I was just about to head out when I caught another nice thermal which took me up past the HG launch to about 8,700 ft. I then flew back out over the PG launch and headed West in a thermal, but then it died and I ended up sledding all the way to the LZ, (well almost, I was about 200 yds short, practically walking on the roof of a house on the hill before the LZ). Overall I flew for 40 min's. Max lift (10sec avg.) was + 700, and max sink was neg 700. There was good thermal activity and as expected this early in the day, lots of sink in between.
Ilke launched about 15 minutes after I did and headed away from the cliff and also found lots of sink. He scratched a little bit down below and landed after about 12 min's. As we were packing up we could barely make out a couple of HG's . We said our good byes and headed home. I assume John will post his story.
PS. Ilke and Red went out to Box for a glass off but it was very windy. Ilke took a short flight to the LZ. Gunter

I went out to Box in the afternoon. Allen was kind enough to drive. The overcast came in around 430 and everything quieted down to 6 to 8 mph. It was still soarable! I ended up flying over the back in a nice thermal and soaring some small one`s over the meadow. Very smooth air ! I packed up and was almost ready when Allen arrived. Short, 45 minutes but sweet!
