Not-good weekend forecast

Post by jlowery » Thu Jun 20, 2013 9:54 am

Saturday winds aloft are forecast strong SW early going W, then back SW. Sunday is very strong SW all day. Sunday might be good for the Whetstones but I don't really feel up to that hike in this weather.

Guess it's a honey-do weekend, unless the forecast changes unexpectedly.

We're considering Yarnell or Aubreys for a glass off this weekend. Forecast is just what we're looking for.

Thinking of a W. Stones glass-off, maybe launch around 4pm.
Leave Tucson around 11am.

Sun Flying: Eric, Mike & I flew the W. Stones
NOAA's forcast was fairly accurate 18-22 w/ 30 gusts.
Eric off first 3-3:30, got to 12k plus for a 2+ hr. flight. Landed next to hwy & Elgin turn-off.
Mike took off next maybe 4pm for a 15min. flight. Hasn't done much Mt. soaring , mostly coastal flying. While heading out to lz he hit a boomer, but elected not to thermal. With full vg on, he was having a hard time penetrating. Nice landing in bail-out lz.
Shortly after Mike's launch winds got stronger. Had a hell of a time getting my nose turned into the wind. Finally getting a wing tip into the wind, I hooked in. Upon turning into direct wind, left wing lifted and spun me around. Around 5pm winds started backing off. Hooked-in with a 12 to 16 & waited for an 18-20 which took 30sec.
Trying to self launch in 18 to 20mph conditions, with no wire crew can be a real bitch.
Got to 1800 over for a 45min flight. Nice air once up, but flying through the gradient was nothing less than a bull ride. back in Tucson Around 8:30pm.
