Message Board Software update

Post by jlowery » Sun Jan 13, 2013 11:29 am

If you're reading this you've undoubtably noticed that the message board software has changed.

I've updated us from PhpBB version 2 to version 3. I had been resisting doing this because I hate changes to software and websites that I'm comfortable with, but it became unavoidable. Our web hosting provider upgraded to a new version of PHP, which introduced a weird bug in the older message board software that I was unable to fix. Certain users (anyone with "do" in their name) were unable to log in, getting redirected to pages that did not exist.

So, we are now upgraded. All existing messages and users should have been preserved. The only features that didn't survive the upgrade is the photo album feature, which I hope to get operational within the next few days.

Please send questions or reports of any bugs or problems to me via PM or email.

Thanks for your patience and understanding.

John

John, thanks very much for managing the web site. We all depend on it, but few of us appreciate the effort required to keep it working.

As before, this version also supports a news feed. If you use a browser (IE8, IE9 among others) or other news reader that supports "Atom" news feeds you can subscribe and will see updates when new items are posted in the Public Messages or For Sale forums. I haven't added the Member Discussions feed because of privacy concerns.

IE8 and IE9 advertise the availability of the feeds by lighting up the command bar "View Feeds" button when you're browsing the SAHGA forum. I haven't checked for how other browsers do it.

If you use a different News Reader that supports "Atom" feeds (I use RssOwl) you can use the application-specific command to create a new feed and use the address http://www.sahga.com/forum3/feed.php

Another feature that is new to the board is national language support.

I've currently got American English, British English and German (casual honorifics) installed. You can select the language you would like for buttons and icons by clicking on the "User Control Panel" link above, or on this link (http://www.sahga.com/forum3/ucp.php), clicking on the "Board Preferences" tab, and choosing a language in the "My Language" box.

If you do not see your preferred language there please let me know and i will get it installed.
