RGSA says Dry Canyon Memorial Day Fly-in is Postponed

Post by jlowery » Mon May 02, 2011 1:06 pm

This from Robin Hastings:
“Hello, all RGSA folks and potential Dry Canyon Fly-In attendees. I just spoke with my contact at the Lincoln National Forest, in which our Dry Canyon and La Luz launches are located. As of next week, she told me, expect the Lincoln National Forest to be closed to all entry, because of extreme fire danger. This does not come as a huge surprise. We've had no moisture since December and the forest is as parched as a piece of old parchment. Any spark at this point will be a disaster - especially with the winds we've been having. So until further notice, the DRY CANYON FLY-IN IS POSTPONED. Access to La Luz, Dry Canyon, Long Ridge and just about anything in the Sacramento Mountains is off limits, to us pilots and to everyone, until we get some rain and the fire restrictions are lifted. In the meantime, we do have other flying options in RGSA country. There are the El Paso area launches still available, for those willing to hike: Lee's Lookout, Agave Hill, Kilbourne Hole, the Portrillos, and towing at the Sod Farm in Santa Teresa. There is the Little Floridas, south of Deming, a nice 1000-ft site with the LZ about 2:1 from launch. The Caballo Mountains near Truth or Consequences is available for advanced pilots, and for our dual members, the SSA sites up north should still be open. I'm sorry for the bad news, but better to be prepared for it now. Call me if you have any questions, at 575-xxx-xxxx in Las Cruces. I'll hope to see you in the sky - somewhere.

-Robin”
He also says that they don't know when they’ll try the Fly-In again. They may just wait until Columbus Day.
