Sat Flying report

Post by Eric » Sun May 07, 2006 1:33 pm

We met in the Miller LZ at 0915, Morey,John,Charlie,Jason,Randy and I.
Conditions looked strong, 8 to 12 south east. As we drove up the canyon we spotted north west winds. Just below the main launch I got out to remove debris from the roadway. The wind was strong from the north west 10 to 12mph. I walked up to launch to find strong gusty condition, sse at 10 gusting to 15. John had unloaded the gliders by then and was driving down to pick up Jason and Randy. I kicked dirt on the se launch for 15 minutes before deciding to set up. Morey and John and I were set up by 1045 to 1100. I still did not care for the strong conditions, we waited for things to calm down. Mean while Charlie hiked out to the east launch, we all hoped he would not attempt to fly in these conditions. He didn`t.
Conditions did calm down so I suited up. The lulled conditions were followed by the north west wind! I sat on launch waiting for a up cycle, after 20 minutes. I gave up and broke down. We all met up in the LZ and figured out how to get the driver back to Tucson and the pilots to a flying sight. John drove for Randy and I at box and Jason stayed at Miller.
We arrived at Box at 345 and I launched at 440 in nice thermal cycles. The lift was good at launch so I concentrated on getting up there before heading over to the pg peak. At a thousand feet over launch and a little behind I headed ssw for the pg launch. I picked up a good thermal half way there and still east of the ridge line. After a few 360`s I was at 7500msl and radioed John that I was OTB. I drifted in this same thermal 5 miles east a little past route 83,topping out at 10,500 ft msl.
Randy launched while I was climbing out. He was able to get a little over before losing the thermal, so he flew over to the pg ridge looking for another boost. It did not happen so he glided out to land in the front LZ.
After speaking to John on the radio I flew back to Randys truck in the meadow and spiraled down to land there. John drove his truck out front and I drove Randys out to him. We had cold adult beverages and switched gliders around and we were off to Tucson and Randy headed back to Miller.
Long day to get an hours airtime, but worth it!
