Miller Canyon Fly-in

Post by ioan » Mon Oct 06, 2014 3:37 pm

During the last SAHGA meeting the new date for the Miller Canyon Fly-in was set to October 18-19 2014. Hope the weather will cooperate this time. See you all there.

What do we do with the fly-in if the weather doesn't cooperate? It doesn't look extreme but I don't think it will work this weekend. Any ideas?

It's looking 8-10 SSE at launch altitude in the morning through early afternoon on both days. Light lift, moderate top of lift, should be nice cool fall conditions.

Eric Smith and I are planning on being in the LZ between 8:30 and 9:00 AM tomorrow, and Eric will be down there on Sunday.

The US Forest Service hasn't put SAHGA's new lock on the gate yet, so we have a single key to the USFS lock on the gate. If you're planning on coming out either day it would be worth calling or texting Eric Smith ( 520 405 3814 ) to coordinate road access.

Hope we'll see some flyers down there!

At the moment, the forecast for Sunday looks slightly better than that for Saturday, but neither is very encouraging. The winds are predicted to be too strong and too southerly for the PG launches. In any case, I arrive back in Tucson on Saturday evening, jet-lagged. I'll likely head down to Miller Canyon on Sunday morning. Please let me know if you want to coordinate rides.

I'm planning to meet Eric at Houghton & I10 on Sunday @ 7:00 AM. Eric thinks he has a driver & I plan on bringing Jennifer. We are going to give it a try and see how it turns out. Let us know if your interested.

Saturday was no good for paragliding. I measured the winds at the HG launch and they were averaging 12-14 mph with gusts to 22, very turbulent. Direction was mostly South. The prediction was calling for lighter winds (7-10) at least before noon but it was a lot stronger. We looked at the PG launch and at times the wind would come in from the East but the little streamer was all over the place.

It looks to me that tomorrow's prediction is similar to what was predicted for Saturday but I think it will also get stronger than predicted, so I I'm going to stay home.

Monday, of course looks great for Miller ;-)

Be safe!
