Aviation Awareness Day in Oro Valley

Post by John Wolfe » Mon Oct 28, 2013 4:36 pm

Sonoran Desert Flyers, an R/C flying club, is sponsoring Aviation Awareness Day on December 7th (I know) of this year in Oro Valley. This is a benefit event for the Wounded Warrior project. In addition to R/C flight demonstrations, the event will feature a full-size Blackhawk helicopter, courtesy of Homeland Security, and an opportunity to interact with real-live hang glider and paraglider pilots.

That latter bit is where you come in. I need pilots to turn up on the day of the event and staff the HG/PG tent where we’ll have magazines, literature and giveaways. We’re also hoping to have a static display of an assembled hang glider as well as a static display of a paraglider (not terribly interesting), and displays of the electronics we carry.
If the weather cooperates, we will provide PG kiting demonstrations and we will tow a few PG pilots up at La Cholla Airpark and have them land on the R/C runway.

I would also like to have some of our more experienced HG pilots evaluate the R/C field to determine whether it’s possible to launch from the rim of the pit and land on the R/C runway on the floor of the pit. Since I have serious doubts about the suitability of the site for this purpose, I’ll need help evaluating the site. The coordinates of the R/C field are: 32.416756°, -110.980271°.

We will have at least one practice day during which we can execute launches and landings if the site turns out to be suitable. At the moment, I’m targeting a day during the week of November 18th for the first practice day.

Please post here or contact me (j_r_wolfe@msn.com) if you can commit to the day of the event (December 7th). Also, please indicate if and when you can visit the R/C field with me to determine whether it is suitable for a launch so that we can then plan to include you in the practice day. I must obtain an insurance certificate from USHPA in advance for the practice day.

It turns out the USHPA pop-up tent is broken. Does the club (or any of its members) have one we can use for shade on the day of the event?

I've got a blue 10'x10' if that will help. Awning only, no sides.
Also a 6' folding table and folding chairs, if needed. The chairs a definitely nothing fancy.
Also have the SAHGA logo on a 20x30 display card, and a couple of mounted HG/PG photos that we used at the USFS Parker Canyon Lake event, if you want them.

Count me in for the event. The National Get Outdoors Day at Parker Canyon was alot of fun. We hung alot of kids from the tripod so maybe we could do that again.

Whitney, thanks for volunteering. It will be great to have you there.
John, I'll take you up on the offer of the awning, table, and chairs. Are you planning to be there for the event?

I won't be at this month's club meeting, but I'm hoping those who are there will discuss this event and decide who will represent the hang gliders. I think the PG side is reasonably well covered.

We are planning a practice day for November 18th, focused primarily on sorting out the logistics of surface-towing paragliders from La Cholla Airpark and landing them in Naranja Park. We will also determine the feasibility of launching PGs from the rim of The Pit at Naranja Park. It would be good to have a hang glider pilot turn up on that day to evaluate the feasibility of launching a hang glider from the rim as well. I have all the necessary USHPA insurance and paperwork for November 18th and December 7th. If we need an additional practice day, I will obtain another set of insurance certificates.

The event on December 7th opens at 8:00 a.m. and is scheduled to conclude around noon.
Those setting up the awning, tripod, simulators, tables, etc. should plan to arrive at Naranja Park early enough to have everything set up by 8:00 a.m.

John, re the practice day - 18 November is a Monday, is that date correct?

Also, if you're not going to be able to make the meeting please be sure to vote online on the By-laws changes.

Yes, the practice day is Monday, November 18th. I selected a weekday in an effort to minimize the impact on GA traffic at La Cholla Airpark and to accommodate the work schedules of some of our participants.

I voted electronically shortly after you sent the first message on the topic several weeks ago. Please let me know if you did not receive my vote.

Please plan to converge on The Pit by 7:00 a.m. this Saturday, December 7th.
We'll need to set up the awning, table, chairs, banner, literature racks, hang glider and paraglider equipment displays, and then be ready to talk to the public when the event opens at 8:00 a.m.
Thanks again for helping with this event.

Sorry for the confusion, Whitney.

"The Pit" is my nickname for Oro Valley Naranja Park. The entrance is just east of La Canada on the north side of Naranja, and it's marked with a sign. On Saturday, there will be people to guide you to the area where we will set up. I live in the neighborhood just west of The Pit, but if you need a ride, please let me know, and I'll arrange to collect you.

The Sonoran Desert Flyers, an R/C model aircraft club based in Oro Valley, put on an Aviation Awareness Day at Narnja Park in Oro Valley this Saturday. The event was held in conjunction with the Oro Valley Parks Department and the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA), the modellers' national organization.

SAHGA had a booth at this event and I thought it was pretty successful. Turnout was excellent and we spoke to a number of people, gave away a lot of hand-outs generously provided by the USHPA, and generally promoted the sport.

The paraglider pilots put on a real show. Ewan Crosby was step-towed at nearby La Cholla Airpark and flew into Narnja park, landing on the R/C landing strip. He and the tow team also did a towing demonstration along side the park so the spectators could see the launch end of the operation. It was a real testament to the skill and hard work of the entire team that it came off looking so cool.

Mike Sargeant also did a foot launch from the hills right behind the landing strip and landed on the strip. He got a lot of oohs and ahs on that one!

Eric Smith and Rafael Ramirez set up hang gliders for static display. Eric hiked his topless T2 up to the top of the adjacent hills and staked it down against the breeze. They got a lot of attention, and more than a few visitors hiked up to see it Eric's glider close-up. Eric also had his tripod and let kids hang in a training harness. This was a big attraction for the kids at the Parker Canyon Lake event, and it was just as popular here.

I've posted a couple of pictures of the event at http://www.flickr.com/photos/27912590@N ... 480728823/.

Congratulations to John Wolfe, Andy Miller, and everyone who put together this great event promotion for paragliding and hang gliding.

John
