Mustangs and Miller Canyon restricted airspace

Post by jlowery » Thu Jul 12, 2012 12:49 am

I passed some bad information at the meeting last night and want to get it corrected.

The Mustangs sit under restricted airspace R2303B, which goes from 8000' to 30000' MSL, active Mondays through Fridays from 7 AM to 5 PM, and other times by NOTAM.

The airspace restrictions around Sierra Vista are complicated, so I've created a simplified map to help. Click on the map for a slightly larger version:
<A HREF="http://www.sahga.com/images/SierraVista ... .jpg"><IMG SRC="http://www.sahga.com/images/SierraVista ... l.jpg"></A>

This is only a cheat sheet, actual times can change by NOTAM. The best way to find out if a restriction is active is call a Flight Serivce Station breifer at 1-800-WXBRIEF. They will ask for a tail number, tell them you are a part 103 ultralight pilot and have no tail number. Ask about TFRS and NOTAMS in the area of Libby Field KFHU.

You can also look up NOTAMS and TFRS online at https://www.notams.faa.gov/dinsQueryWeb/. To use this web page, scroll down to the "Radius Search", enter the airport ID KFHU, and press "View NOTAMS". It will grind for a few minutes and then spit out a long list of text. Scan for any references to R2303. If none are there, the times I gave above should be correct.

Hope this helps.

Thanks John

One update I think R2303 A also includes R2303 B which changes the upper limit to FL300.

So my understanding of the summary is, we can not fly in the area of the balloon and the airport anytime. We can not fly in the areas (R2303 A & R2303 B) weekdays (700-1700 hours) and R2303-C is intermittent by Notam.

Notam can pop up anytime and should always be checked.

Please correct me if I misstated something.

While we are on the Miller area discussion, what are the landing restricted areas?

Andy,

You're right, it's not clear in the drawing that R-2303A is completey contained within R2303B and they overlap. R2303C is disjoint. I'll try to modify it so that that is clear.

Your summary is exactly correct. There is currently a NOTAM out for Libby (KFHU) class D airspace hours for the next few weeks, but I just assume it's closed to part 103 pilots any time I want to be flying.

I know I've been lax about checking NOTAMs and TFRs, and they are extremely important in the complicated airspaces over Sierra Vista, Tucson, and Phoenix, and basically everywhere during fire season.

Thanks,
John
