Flying this Weekend

Post by John Wolfe » Fri May 18, 2012 12:31 pm

Saturday looks like it could be a bit too windy at the Lemmon, and I'm in no hurry to repeat last week's experience. Sunday looks like it might be the better day for the Lemmon.

At least one of the Phoenix lot is muttering that Oatman is the place, for both days. Sean will be towing in Rainbow Valley. I could be convinced to make the trek to either Oatman or RBV if someone else from Tucson will go with me.

Let me know if you're available to fly and which day and site you prefer.

Looks like we have several options for Sunday. SR and BD at Lemmon could work as well as Miller. Anyone interested?

Miller flight report 5/20/12 (44miles, 3hr 28min)

Ewan, John W. & I arrived around ~10:30 at the east Miller launch. The wind was blowing straight in when we got to launch. By the time we gave Ewan a site intro and got our gear ready, the launch conditions had changed. Flags not matching, strong gust & then dead. We had the typical Miller launch struggle. John tried to go first but after waiting for a while he stepped down. Ewan went next and he got off with minor tip collapses on both sides after waiting for a few minutes for a cycle he liked. This was Ewan’s first Miller flight. Congratulations to Ewan for his first Miller flight. I setup next and waited for quit a while before going. Ewan was on the ground before I got setup on launch. I made a few passes out in front of launch and shortly was up to 9k. The wind was drifting me to the NNW. While John packed up & drove down, I went out over the valley and made my way north to the border check station. That's about when John & Ewan caught up with me. The wind direction was different at different layers, but it still had a north component at the low level (below 11k). Between Benson and the end of the Whetstones I found lots of lift and hit my max altitude of ~12.3k. The wind above 11k was out of the North. I continued my trek towards Vail. I ended up flying for about 3hr 28 min and landed 44 miles from Miller launch, a little ways west of Vail.

A big THANK YOU to John and Ewan for taking on the driving/retrieve duties.
