Flying Sunday 10/16

Post by John Wolfe » Fri Oct 14, 2011 2:06 pm

The weather looks lovely, so let's go flying.

Box Canyon looks like it might work, and that would give us an opportunity to get both types of wings in the air, perhaps even at the same time. It would be especially nice if we had a driver.

My preference would be to go to the top unless the predicted wind speeds increase. If we have HGs along, they need to go there anyway.

So, please post here or contact me if you are interested.

Looks like maybe Box on Sat PM and Mustang on Sunday PM. I have the mother of all 4x4 pickups and can haul a bunch of PGs up the backside of Box, but I don't have HG racks.

I'll check wind forecast Sat AM and post my plans.

I think it's time for me to shake some dust off my wing. Sunday.

Count me in for Sunday, I want to go.

How about getting some of you hang gliders to come out and fly with us?

When and where are we meeting?

Get a few more people and we can just call it a fly-in.

Let’s go fly and have some fun. :flip:

The PG crew is meeting at Houghton and Sahuarita at 10:00 a.m. with a goal of being on top by noon. So far, I think the following PG pilots are planning to join us:
- Ewan
- Dave
- Andy
- John
- Morey (you're flying the bag, right?)
- Scott (haven't heard from you, but assuming you're joining us)
That's 6 pilots, and Gunter as the driver makes 7, which is too many for my Yukon. Scott, how many can the MOAFWD carry?

The HG crew is still formulating plans, but it looks like we may need another driver.

Still looks high pressure for Sunday.
I was planning on a glassoff. Showing up in the LZ around 1:30 or 2 and hiking up the front- as high as I need to go. My guess is that's it's going to be a light an irritable day, mid-day, and will pick up and get steadier later in the afternoon.

I might park in the LZ and hike to the top and meet you guys there. I need to be at work by 3 so I'll need to get off the hill early, unfortunately.

Big showing today of HGs and PGs at Box. I think 9? Anyway- a pretty classic Box afternoon. Sunny, warm, smooth lift just glassing off from more than 2hrs prior to sunset. My 1st PG flight in 2 years! Wow- can't believe it has been that long. Launch, flight and landing all uneventful, pleasant and relaxing.

Oh. The trail up to the 1st knoll, if there even is one; sux. Everything is just covered in cat claw- so give yourself some extra time and bring long pants. Some larger plants growing on our launches as well. Andy, JohnW, Aaron and Gunter did some work on the upper launch today.

It was, indeed, one of our largest turn-outs in a long time. Scott and Dave, we missed you, and had you been there you would have pushed us into double digits.

The nine committing aviation were Aaron C., Ewan, Andy, Morey, and myself all flying PGs, and Eric S., Eric T., John L., and Rafael, all sporting aluminum.

Aaron, Ewan, Andy, Gunter, and I did a bit of gardening up top, and the place looks much better for the effort.

Congratulations to Ewan and Aaron who both had their first flights at Box Canyon. Aaron managed two in one day after getting really high before the transition flushed him.

The lift was smooth but topped out too low to allow any of us to escape the mountain, and that turned out to be just fine as we all had a great time boating around the terrain and each other.

Thanks to all of you for coming out and enjoying a great day.

Most importantly, thanks to our two dedicated drivers, Raquel and Gunter, who spent the entire day on the ground so we could fly.

And, congratulations to Gunter who hiked to the top of Box Canyon and back down again, five years after losing a leg.

Sweet. I wish I had made it out. Instead, I was digging on some Miles Davis Experience at Centennial Hall Sunday afternoon.
