Miller Friday! (Reports added)

Post by jlowery » Thu Sep 16, 2010 11:45 am

Eric Smith, Tom Morrison and I would like to fly Miller tomorrow. It's looking very nice, ADDS has the 11 AM winds aloft 5-10 east at 6000' and 9000', going 5 northeast by 5 PM. Dr Jack predicts 600-700 fpm thermals and cloudbase around 12000-13000 MSL.

We had a great time when we went on Tuesday, and Friday looks even better because of a little breeze to launch in. Saturday looks ok, too, not quite as good but the same winds aloft profile.

We'll be meeting at Eric's at 7:30 AM, Miller LZ around 9:00. There's room for more, if anyone else wants to play hooky.

I would like to join you guys as I haven't yet visited Miller. I hear it's a bit more advanced of a site so I don't anticipate launching but I can help you guys launch and drive if you want.

Hey Aaron,

If you'd like to come out to check the place out you're absolutely welcome to. I haven't heard from any of the other PG pilots, so it might be an all-HG crew.

I'm not sure where you're coming from, I live on the northwest side, Ina & I-10 area. My son Sean (our driver and wire crew) and I will be picking up Whitney on the way to Eric Smith's place on the east side.

Would you like to drive down with us, or meet us in the LZ?

Sorry I missed out today, guys. I was in Bisbee yesterday and didn't get back until late and slept in. I hope you have some good flying.

Miller Friday Flight Report

Post by amiller » Fri Sep 17, 2010 7:02 pm

Aaron & I arrived at launch at about 2:40. After setting up and waiting a few minutes for a cycle to come straight up the north launch, I launched at 3:05. I did not find any lift at the hill but found some over the last knob before getting to the LZ. Hung out their for a short time and got up to 8800ft before going on glide to land 6.3 miles from launch down by Montazuma Cyn Rd. Flight time was about 45min.

Big big thanks to Aaron for driving.

Not as good for the HGs.

We got there late due to car problems, about noon. We found there were still in cycles on the north launch so Tom and I set up. He launched first, flew over the half-pipe and didn't find much lift he could work, so took an extended sledder to the LZ. I went next shortly after, went right and found even less left, found a few bumps over the hill behind the LZ but nothing I could core, so got a quick sled ride to the LZ.

Seeing those flights, Eric decided not to set up the T2, so drove down with Whitney.

Thanks to Whitney and Eric for the help on launch and the driving.

John

That's just crazy. In the old days, there used to be more thermals.

Yesterday was alot of fun. JLo, me and Canada Tom met up at Eric's house. We headed on to Miller. We got as far as Marsh Station and the truck was overheating. Turns out we had a blown intake manifold gasket. We found all the water we could from Eric's stash, random water bottles and camelbacks. We found a place to cut across the highway to head back to town. We could only go about 55 mph and semi's were passing us on the bumper. We needed more water so we stopped at Rincon Valley Fire Department, oh tough times haha. The firefighters were so kind and friendly, actually giving us a tour of their new facility. Finally made it back to Eric's mechanic next to his house. JLo literally ran to Eric's house to get his jeep so we could head back out to Miller. Bill (mechanic) said no way can I do these repairs today. Eric was insisting that we get back to Miller so Bill, an ex paraglider said I'll get it done for you by someone else so just go fly. We left to go back to Miller and got there about or as Tom would say aboot 12. Jlo went to hang some streemers and got attacked by a swarm of bees. Tom had left his helmut behind from earlier in the week and some animal chewed out the lining. We would like to think it was a bobcat but thinking more along the lines of a squirrel. Tom launched first and then JLo. Short flights but considering the day glad all were safe. Eric and I passed Andy and Aaron as were coming down from launch. When we were in the LZ we see Andy in the air, nice!!!! Nice to meet you Aaron and good job Andy getting off so quickly. Got back home and enlisted Eric's help restoring our new project, 1974 Stingray. Hope you guys have a great flying day and see you next weekend.
