So I'm paroozing ebay today and I see this extra-long whip antenna made to be mounted on the B risers or hang glider frame and it's being sold by someone in Tucson. So I figure it's gotta be someone in the club. Goes by the handle 'Dr. Telemark' on ebay. So, whoever it is, I'm just wondering what radio these things hare meant for (I have 3 radios and they all have different antenna mounts) and if there has been any testing that shows that there is a real reception/transmission improvement over stock antennas.

A long whip is a major improvement over the stock rubber ducky antennas. I use a 5/8 wave collapsable whip to talk to drivers when on the ground away from the LZ, and the difference is night and day.

In the air I use a 1/4 wave made from coax with the center conductor up my hang strap and the braid down the harness which also does very well. That probably wouldn't adapt well to a PG harness, though.

When I talked to Aaron Stutz a few days ago, he was talking about sometihng like that. He wanted to show me his setup the the next time we go flying. From his description, you can put whatever type of connector you need to fit your radio.

Hi, y'all. I am indeed Dr. Telemark on Ebay, and yes, I have been making these antennas just as John Lowery described, with coax cable. This version works for paragliding because it runs up your suspension line with heat-shrink tubing, but would also work for hang gliders as well with some zip ties. And yes, it is a considerable improvement over the stock antenna.

If you guys want the antenna plans, i'd be more than happy to describe them to you. They are relatively easy to make if you have the right tools, and the parts are inexpensive. Or you can just buy one of mine on Ebay.
