The draft environmental report for the proposed Rosemont Mine will be released in August and a decision on the project will be made by January 2012, the U.S. Forest Service announced today.

I see that our endorsement is still up on their web site. I have phoned and emailed to have it removed. I will try again.

edit.
Attempted additional emails to the president and director of SSR and left a message on Lisa's phone, with a nice apology but firm direction that our endorsement needs to be removed.

Edit 2. Lisa called me back- I had a nice conversation with her. She said she'll have it taken down.

You may let our friends at Rosemont Copper know that our endorsement of SSR has been removed.

Terry called me this morning and pointed out that the Arizona Daily Star has an article in the paper about the Rosemont Mine Project. SAHGA is mentioned in the article.

The on-line azstarnet.com article (by Tony Davis) about the Rosemont mine finishes with some personal opinions, the last attributed to "Eric Smith ...of the Southern Arizona Hang Gliding Association, a recreational club that endorses the mine."

I thought the club only agreed to un-endorse from the Save the Scenic Santa Rita group, and just remain neutral (as recorded in minutes from the March 8, 2011, meeting).

I believe we (the club) need to stay neutral on this for the time being, and have it so corrected by the Arizona Daily Star.

Any other ideas or thoughts on this?

Respectfully,
Terry Kowing

I definitely think, as a club, we should remain neutral on this issue. If individuals would like to endorse one cause or the other, by all means, go ahead, I would just leave the club name out of it.

I, for instance, would much sooner endorse the Save the Santa Ritas than the mine project even if it meant potentially loosing a site. I just think So. Az. (and Box Canyon) deserves better than to be buried in over-burden.

I think some discussion should take place at the 7/12 meeting about why the AZstar.net article mentioned the (SAHGA) club as "endorsing" the Rosemont Copper Mine, and whether they should correct that to "neutral", which would be my vote.

I won't be at the meeting, as the wife and I are in Seattle visiting relatives and friends, but eat some pizza, and drink some beer for me.

Done. The club is neutral on the mine issue since we asked SSSR to remove us from their web site list of supporters. The Star article was in error.

Eric already demanded and got a promise of a retraction, since he never said that SAHGA supported the mine.

Once published, if the club has any problems with people claiming we support the mine we can provide the retraction to resolve the issue.
