Saturday, 3/27

Post by jlowery » Thu Mar 25, 2010 2:29 pm

Saturday is looking northwest on the surface and aloft at 11 AM and 5 PM.

That doesn't sound good for the training hill day. AFAIK there is no usable northwest-facing slope in the Sonoita valley.

The fallback metioned at the meeting was for scooter towing, probably at McCarthy road, but fewer pilots seemed interested in that.

I'd like to get a flight this weekend. If we do the training day I'd like to go flying afterwards. The conditions look great for Box Canyon later in the day.

I'd like to fly on Saturday, but I arrive home late Friday evening, assuming the various airlines behave. Please post the plan here.

Is that a good direction for Mt. Lemmon? Who has the contact information to find out if we can get to launch?

Andy,

I'm not current enough to fly Mt. Lemmon, am looking to get back into flying with something a little more managable.

Eric Smith would be the guy to talk to about the Lemmon. He's the only one I know qualified to act as a site guide.

There's about 8 feet of snow up there right now. Ya' might want to wait a few weeks.

ADDS has winds still NW tomorrow, all altitudes. Surface L&V at 5 AM becoming 5-10 NW by 11 AM. It doesn't look good for a training hill day.

So what's up? Will we go scooter towing or call off the training day entirely?

Are any HG types interested in Box Canyon in the afternoon? Eric is still out with a foot injury but said he might be willing to drive. Orrin is no-go, it's his birthday and he's got plans for the weekend.

Morey,

Where & when did you get your info for Mt. Lemmon? What I can tell from the web cam, this week has really melted a lot of snow. This is the link to the web cam.

I had a friend post some images on his facebook page of his cabin - I think from this past weekend. Literally- about 8 feet of snow there at the time.

my quick look at the winds for saturday would indicate that it's blown out.

I suppose I'll look again in the morning. Maybe a glassoff at Box?

Never hurts to look again in the morning, but right now it's blown out for PG. Possibly Boxable for HG, but still on the strong side.

Scooter towing in the lowlands will probably be OK, with some breezy conditions in the pm. I don't know how much a scooter can take. Eric was right- weather this time of year is pretty iffy to schedule a training hill day.

The good news is that Sunday looks potentially like an A Mountain day.

Good evening, SAHGA. So much for the Sonoita training day... Box looks like the best bet, manana. Never launched from the road, so a little leary, would probably have to hike my wing up to the PG point and wait for a 2:00 to 4:00 pm launch. Debbie will be with me but she is not CRAZY...about driving down. I would probably show up in the front LZ to check it out and possibly manicure since it's been a while. I'll check in around 8:00 am to see what anyone else has posted.

P.S. Thanks Morey for mentioning the A on Sunday, sounds good should the weather hold true.

Rafael,

I'll help you if you'd like to take a shot at the regular HG launch. That hike to the PG launch is nasty with a HG on your back.

Want to meet in the front LZ around 11?

I’m planning to go.

Accu weather out of Green Valley for hourly forecast shows it turning from S to NW in the morning hours with the highest winds at 5PM @ 13mph NNW. Most of the day is in the low teens.

Air Sport Net out of Tucson has winds aloft; 6000ft @ 10mph 340(wind direction), 9000ft @ 29mph 320 & 12000ft @ 49mph 310.

ADDS for 1800UTC is showing surface winds very light & mixed direction but 6000ft @ 20kts out of N, 9000ft @ 30kts out of NW.

The frd sounding for Tucson shows the winds in the 14 to 19kts up to 7000ft.

I may only be ground support, but I’ll see what it looks like when I arrive.

I’ll be on the radio.
