Miller Saturday?

Post by jlowery » Thu May 14, 2009 11:03 am

Current forecasts have it excellent for Miller, at least for the stiffies.

On Friday, ADDS says 11 AM, 6000 south 0-5, 9000 south-southwest 0-5.
5 PM 6000 and 9000 southwest 5-10. Dr. Jack has the top of lift at 13-14k, -3 at 12k, thermals at 600-700 fpm.

Saturday looks like the big day. The ADDS winds aloft forecast says 11 AM, 6000 southeast 5-8, 9000 southeast 8-10. 9000. 5 PM, 6000 south 0-5, 9000 south 0-5. Dr. Jack thinks the top of lift will be 16-17k, -3 at 13-14k, thermals at 800 fpm.

Sunday winds look generally southeast at this time, getting lighter during the day but staying generally southeast.

The caveat is that the winds are based on a big low in the Pacific off the Baha coast, so as the position and timing of that thing changes so will the forecast. Stay tuned...

I *really* want to fly Miller this weekend. Anyone else?

I'd be up for Miller on Saturday if the weather holds. I'll recheck the forecast tomorrow.

The forecast still looks excellent for Saturday. Seems like there's real XC potential.

If it's ok with everyone else I'll plan on being at Houghton and I-10 at 7:30 AM for anyone that wants to ride-share so we can hit the LZ around 9.

At the moment Eric is planning on driving down separately because of possible training in the afternoon, but that could change (it's going to be awfully hot for training in the afternoon!).

Wow. Forecast looks terrific for Miller. Light east winds.
We should be able to get as high as we can stand it.

Andy- It will be a terrific day. Easterly light winds will be perfect for the PG launches. Be there!

Miller flying

I had a great time. About an hour of flight time. No photos from the air but a couple of landing videos.

Thanks for the site intro.

Nice photos and vids Andy.

For the rest of you playing at home; Andy (PG), J-Lo and I all had nice flights at Miller. It wasn't too turbulent or too strong today- with some really enjoyable thermalling. Orrin, on the other hand, went XC and eventually flew to his house. First big XC of the year deserves an Eagle nomination.

Of course, along with Eagle often comes the Turkey nomination- which Orrin deserves for not having a radio that could transmit and John ended up driving to Tombstone to look for him.

J-Lo gets a Pilot of the Mo nomination for agreeing to be the last pilot off launch with no wire crew. Oh- and for chasing Orrin.

I can't make the next meeting- so I wanted to get these three nominations in early :D :D

Oh, yeah, one other thing...

Post by jlowery » Mon May 18, 2009 10:54 am

I forgot to mention that the Miller road work is holding up very well, *except* for the boulders we placed in the path out to the PG launches, which were moved and the path scoured absolutely flat and clean.

That sure was a lot of work for nothing.

I guess we can notify Dwayne at the USFS, but don't know what else we could do.
